Sisters Plan Active, Joy-Filled Life at Pisgah Valley Retirement Community

January 3, 2024

On opposite sides of the country, sisters Susan Stanley and Deb Stewart haven’t lived in the same city in decades. But they are looking forward to reuniting.

They have put in place plans to spend their retirement years living within easy walking distance of each other at Pisgah Valley retirement community nestled in the picturesque Hominy Valley, just outside of Asheville, North Carolina.

Stanley, 72, moved to Pisgah Valley in September. Stewart, 68, who is still working as a flight attendant, is on the waiting list. She and her husband, Don, will move as soon as one of the community’s two-bedroom/two-bathroom patio homes becomes available.

Pisgah Valley offers independent living homes along with assisted living, rehabilitation and skilled nursing care. Stanley says they both were attracted to the rural, outdoor atmosphere. Pisgah Valley provides, unusual surroundings in senior living communities.

Attracted by Rural Location

“Deb is on the same page with me,” says Stanley. “We both love mountain views, hiking and the small-town atmosphere of Asheville.”

She says Pisgah Valley stands out. Especially, because other senior living communities seem to her like “living in a hotel.”

Stewart, who lives in Salt Lake City, decided to move to Pisgah Valley after visiting her sister there. She was impressed with her sister’s patio home and other amenities.

“I like having an outdoor space and a garage,” says Stewart. “It’s also close to everything, but it’s rural.”

Stanley, a retired nurse, has lived in Asheville for ten years. She also is pleased with her new patio home. She was able to customize to her taste.

In a addition, “I got new kitchen cabinets and quartz counters,” she says. “They painted everything the colors I wanted. It was like moving into a new unit.”

Outdoor Spaces

She also enjoys the outdoor space and the views from her windows.

“You can have a yard if you want one and work in it or not. A least you have the space,” Stanley says. “When I look out my window, I see cows in a pasture. It’s very calming.”

Although she’s only lived there a few months, Stanley is enjoying participating in yoga classes and other activities.

“There is a very nice gym, a pool and personal trainers,” she says.

Being physically fit is key to aging well. One of the community’s priorities is providing an annual physical assessment for residents. It allows each resident to better understand their physical fitness baseline. As well as, how to improve as they take part in the community’s various classes. Classes include water aerobics, fitness and balance, strength and other courses.

Active Together

Stanley was also attracted to Pisgah Valley because of the community’s variety of activities. Many choices from book clubs and arts and crafts. Not to mention, trips off-site to attend concerts, plays and other events.

“Our activity director plans these,” she says. “All you do is get on a bus, and they take you. You don’t have to worry about driving or parking.”

As they make plans for their lives at Pisgah Valley, Stanley and Stewart are both looking forward to being involved together in the community’s many activities.

“We’ll be able to visit each other and participate in activities,” Stanley says. “I really see my sister and brother-in-law blossoming here.” They also will have more time to enjoy those endeavors. Both sisters agree that they were attracted by the idea of not having to maintain a single-family home anymore.

“I was done with being a homeowner,” Stanley says. “It was a lot more work than I wanted to do.”

Stanley describes Pisgah Valley senior living community “as a little gem.”

She says the only thing that will make it better is when her sister joins her there.
